Quandela and Gilles Zémor’s group at the Institut de Mathématiques de Bordeaux (IMB) are seeking a 2-year postdoctoral researcher (with possibility for extension) to work on Quantum Error Correction.

Who are we?

The Institut de Mathématiques de Bordeaux (IMB) is a CNRS – Université de Bordeaux – Bordeaux INP joint research unit. As a host laboratory for the Doctoral School of Mathematics and Computer Science, the IMB brings together most of the mathematical research carried out on the Bordeaux site, and brings together the scientific activities of numerous researchers, teacher-researchers, doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows, working in the following 7 teams: Analysis, Scientific Computation and Modeling, EDP and Mathematical Physics, Geometry, Image Optimization and Probability, Mathematical Optimization Random Model and Statistics, and Number Theory.

Quandela is a spin-off company from the French national laboratory CNRS that develops full-stack photonic quantum platforms. Founded in 2017, Quandela is a team of motivated quantum technology enthusiasts with broad experience ranging from quantum information, optics, quantum photonic, and semiconductor nanotechnologies.

You will be working on a joint project involving the recent developments of high-rate quantum LDPC codes, particularly the ones pioneered at IMB, and the assessment of their performance in the context of realistic errors encountered by photonic platforms, such as the one developed at Quandela. This position is a joint appointment between IMB and Quandela. You will primarily work at IMB in Bordeaux, with frequent professional travel to Quandela’s headquarters to foster collaboration. The collaboration is intended to lead to the creation of a joint laboratory (LabComm).

Your role

  • Develop state-of-the-art quantum error-correcting codes.
  • Enable their use in a fault-tolerant regime, focusing on photonic errors.
  • Participate in the design and development of fault-tolerant quantum computing architectures.
  • Work on the QEC stack of a fault-tolerant computer, including logical gates, efficient decoders, and fault-tolerant thresholds.
  • Undertake high-quality original research and publish in leading international journals and conferences.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in quantum error correction and related fields.

Required skills

  • Ph.D. degree in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
  • Strong background in Quantum Information theory with experience in Quantum Error Correction, or a strong background in Classical Error Correction with an interest in extending knowledge to quantum computing.
  • Proven track record of high-quality research in at least one of the following fields: quantum information, computing, foundations, photonics, quantum optics, computer science.
  • Familiarity with programming languages and tools for scientific computing (such as Python) is appreciated.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and work effectively both independently and within teams.
